The Difference Between PAT Testing and EICR: What You Need to Know

When it comes to electrical safety in the workplace or rental properties, two important checks are often mentioned: PAT Testing and EICR. While both are essential, they serve very different purposes.

At MES Pat Testing, we often get asked:
“Do I need PAT Testing, an EICR, or both?”

Let’s break down the key differences so you can stay compliant, safe, and informed.

What Is PAT Testing?
PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is the process of inspecting and testing portable electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use.

Examples of items that require PAT Testing:

  • Kettles, toasters, microwaves
  • Computers, monitors, and printers
  • Extension leads and chargers
  • Power tools and site equipment

Key features of PAT Testing:

  • Applies to individual appliances
  • Includes a visual inspection and electrical tests
  • Ensures the appliance is safe for everyday use
  • Provides pass/fail labels and a report
  • Typically carried out annually or more often depending on use

PAT Testing is crucial for businesses, landlords, schools, and any organisation that uses plug-in electrical equipment.

What Is an EICR?
EICR stands for Electrical Installation Condition Report. It involves a detailed inspection of the fixed wiring system in a building—including sockets, light fittings, consumer units, and circuits.

EICRs are required for:

  • Rental properties (legal requirement in England every 5 years)
  • Commercial properties
  • Public buildings (e.g. schools, offices, care homes)

Key features of an EICR:

  • Examines the entire electrical installation
  • Identifies potential fire or shock risks
  • Graded codes (C1, C2, C3) indicate severity of issues
  • Performed by a qualified electrician
  • Often required during property sales, rentals, or refurbishments

Do You Need Both?
In most cases—yes.

  • PAT Testing ensures your appliances are safe.
  • EICR ensures the infrastructure powering them is safe.

Together, they form a complete electrical safety strategy.
